The Meaning of Advent
Advent means coming in Latin. The word has two meanings – the first coming of Christ at His birth, and of His second coming at the end of times. Advent begins the first season of the church calendar. The Advent Season is a time to reflect and prepare our hearts for Christmas. We spend Advent preparing for Christmas with decorations and food in our houses and at church. Advent is a season of giving. It is a time when we donate food, gifts, and our time to help minister to those in need, especially for those who struggle during the long cold northern nights.
Throughout the busyness of December, Advent is a reminder to spend time preparing to celebrate Christ. At Christmas, we are encouraged to experience Emmanuel–Christ among us.
